Our History

Upon the birth of the HELLSHIRE PARK ESTATES, there were migrants from the corporate area who were ardent seventh-day Adventists. After a while, they became tired of travelling from the hills of Hellshire to other communities to attend church. They yearned for a Seventh Day Adventist church in their community.

This dream moved closer to becoming a reality in 1984 when the venturesome Jeanette Henry, along with other members  of the Portmore SDA church, decided to  start  a church in Hellshire Park Estates. She organized sabbath worship at Sister Mason’s house. The Mason family opened their bedrooms and living room to the attendants and on that first sabbath, the Ellis, Pitter, Fearon, Pinnock, Reid, and Henry families joined with the Masons  in a delightful day of worship.

The church membership quickly outgrew the accommodation at the Mason residence. Hence the believers searched for a new worship centre.  The Lord directed them to an unoccupied house at 68 Partridge Way. They occupied that worship centre for a decade. The  growing  church longed  for larger  accommodation and  eventually, the UDC (Urban Development Cooperation) gave permission for them to utilize the Hellshire Park Community Centre for church services.

The 1990s ushered in a new era of church growth. Although the church had lost a few of its foundation members to migration, it gained many new converts during those years, under the leadership of Pastor Claude Brown. The vibrant Pastor/Evangelist Jeremiah Bonner conducted a revival that added thirty-three members to the church.

In 1994 the church took a bold step in erecting a temporary structure on a plot of land adjacent to the community centre which they believed the Central Jamaica Conference owned.  However, the construction was halted by the UDC (Urban Development Corporation)  after it  was discovered that the church was on the  wrong property, due to an error in identifying the  correct piece of land.

The property acquired by the Central Jamaica Conference under the instrumentality of Pastor Donald Kent, was actually situated on the opposite side of Pental Avenue. Eventually, an exchange of properties was negotiated.

In November 1996, Pastor Grover S. Hyatt led the church to another significant milestone as it was inducted into the sisterhood of churches in the Central Jamaica Conference. Up to that  point, it  was considered  a company.

Hurricane Ivan destroyed the church's temporary building in 2004. The members used canvas to provide shelter within the walls of the unfinished structure. Later a white tent was pitched for an evangelistic series. This tent served as the church’s shelter for over a year. As Israelites journey through the wilderness so the Hellshire SDA church has had her wilderness experience.

The foundation of the new church building was laid in June 2006 and the members enjoyed their first worship service in the new structure on September 30 2006. This exhilarating moment marked the end of the church’s nomadic experience.

We thank GOD for his tremendous blessings and applaud the outstanding contribution of all our pastors , leaders and members over the years.
